What The Best Shooters Are Doing

Check out what Team Glock and Team Smith & Wesson have been up to.

GLOCK has signed junior phenom Tori Nonaka to its shooting team. Nonaka joins team captain and world champion shooter Dave Sevigny and women's world champ Randi Rogers.

The 15-year-old Nonaka shoots USPSA, Steel Challenge, IPSC, IDPA, Bianchi and Glock Shooting Sport Foundation disciplines. Last year she was national junior champion in USPSA Limited 10, U.S. Steel National Super Junior and IDPA junior champion--in addition to regional and local titles.

"Tori is an extremely gifted young shooter with an incredibly bright career ahead of her," said Glock's Gary Fletcher. "We are very excited to have Tori and the talents she brings to the team."

Team Smith & Wesson turned in an exceptional 2010 season, with its members taking 142 title wins--51 more than the record set the previous year. The 26 team members notched 60 wins at states or sectionals, 36 wins at regional or area matches, 24 national titles and 22 world championships.

The team was led by the company's Champion shooters: Jerry Miculek, Julie Golob and Doug Koenig. Miculek continued his dominance of the revolver world with wins at ICORE, Steel Challenge, USPSA, IDPA and more. Team captain Golob notched her 10th USPSA Single Stack title, her second IRC championship and victories in Steel Challenge and IDPA. Koenig captured his 12th NRA Bianchip Cup win and 17th Masters International Championship. He also bested his own world record at the World Action Pistol Championship.

August 2011 will mark the end of an era when competitors gather in Piru, California, for the Steel Challenge World Shooting Championships. It will be the final year the match will be held there. Handguns asked Steel Challenge Shooting Association's Dave Thomas what prompted the move to Florida's Universal Shooting Academy beginning in 2012.

For one thing, he said, the organization wanted to grow the match and cited the fact that the Southeast portion of the country has a lot of steel shooters. Plus, Thomas noted, the group would like to add competition equipment that wouldn't be legal in California.

Thomas stressed that SCSA is not severing ties with the Piru range, so Californians will be relieved to know that the Piru club's Mike Dalton, one of the pioneers of action shooting, will continue to produce large matches there.

Details were sketchy at press time, but it appears IDPA has added a new class, Distinguished Master. IDPA shooters who've won a division or finished within 3 percent of the division winner at indoor or regular nationals within the past five years automatically became Distinguished Masters.
