The Springfield Hellcat 9mm pistol has really taken off , and Springfield has now added a new 15-round magazine that gives this micro-compact semiauto two more rounds than the standard 13-round magazine. In addition to the added capacity, the new magazine provides a lot more real estate to grip.

Of course, with the higher capacity, the tradeoff is a slightly taller gun. With the 15-rounder in place, height to the top of the slide is just a shade over 4.75 inches. Compare that to the 13-round magazine, which yields a height right at 4.5 inches. (Interestingly, if you use the finger-hook extension to measure the height of the 11-rounder, the pistol is still 4.5 inches tall, but this smaller magazine does conceal a little easier.)

With this new magazine come great choices for concealed carry. Depending on how you’re dressed, you can carry the 15-rounder and basically have a short-barreled, full-frame gun that’s easy to shoot and provides 16 rounds of 9mm. Or opt for the 11- or 13-round magazines in the gun and carry the 15-round magazine as your backup. That puts 27 or 29 rounds, respectively, at your disposal.
Springfield is also offering the new 15-round Hellcat magazine in flat dark earth. I’ve had the chance to shoot the new magazine while filming the upcoming season of “Handguns & Defensive Weapons,” and I can tell you it makes this pistol—which is already well-behaved for such a small 9mm—even more controllable. I think it’s a must-have for any Hellcat owner.
The magazine will be available in black or flat dark earth and carries a suggested retail price of $40.
