Olympic 50m Free Pistol Recap

Olympic 50m Free Pistol Recap
USA shooter Nick Mowrer narrowly missed qualifying for free pistol final. He finished 15th.

It's been more than half a century since the USA won a medal in 50m Free Pistol, the ultimate precision handgun sport. And it will be at least four more years until we do. But it wasn't for lack of trying. Nick Mowrer of Butte, MT, nearly made the final; his 558/600 tally was just a single point from making it into the final. Teammate Daryl Szarenski of Seale, AL, fired a 550 to finish in the 28th place.

The 50m Free Pistol finals provided some fireworks, though. South Korea's Young Rae Choi held a solid lead going into the eight-man final. His 569 score was three points ahead of China's Zhiwei Wang and five points ahead of Serbia's Andrija Zlatic.

It's likely few if any spectators were paying attention to Choi's teammate, Jongoh Jin, fresh off a gold medal performance in Men's 10m Air Pistol who'd qualified for the  50m Free Pistol final with a 562—seven points off the lead. But it was Jin who captured his second gold medal of the Games by smoking everybody with a 100.0 in the final,

vaulting him past both Choi and Wang—who finished with the silver and bronze, respectively.
