Mowrer, Navy Take Collegiate Pistol Honors

nra collegiate pistol logoThe recent NRA Intercollegiate Pistol Championships—held at the inaugural Army Strong Collegiate Shooting Championships at Fort Benning, GA—saw Pikes Peak Community College student Nick Mowrer grab the individual collegiate pistol crown.

Mowrer, a senior and a 2012 U.S. Olympic pistol team hopeful, won the Free Pistol, Standard Pistol and Open Air Pistol events en route to a 1700 out of 1800 points and the overall aggregate—well ahead of his closest competition. Timothy Steinberg and Benjamin Poth, both of the U.S. Naval Academy, who finished second and third respectively with scores of 1603 and 1601.

In the Open Air Pistol individual championship, men and women compete head to head, and Emily Meyer of Navy finished in second place behind Mowrer. Fellow Midshipman Joseph Savo came in third.

In this event, competitors fire a 60-shot course, and the top eight finishers square off in a shot-by-shot final. Navy athletes grabbed six of those eight spots and handily won the Open Air Pistol team championship, finishing 18 points ahead of Texas A&M—2224 to 2206. The U.S. Military Academy fired a 2189 for third.

That was just one feather in Navy's cap as it won both the team aggregate and women's team aggregate with respective scores of 6325 out of 7200 and 2718 out of 3000. The academy won Free Pistol, Open Air Pistol, Women's Air Pistol and Women's Sport Pistol team aggregates, missing only Standard Pistol for a clean sweep.
