Just Announced! Springfield Armory XD(m) 3.8 .45 ACP

by J. Scott Rupp   |  November 7th, 2011 20
springfield armory XD(m) 3.8 Compact .45 with 9-round magazine

With 9-round magazine installed, Springfield Armory's XD(M) 3.8 Compact .45 is just 4.55 inches high and weighs just 27 ounces—perfect for a powerful carry gun.

It was only a matter of time. The popular Springfield Armory XD(M) 3.8 Compact is now available in  .45 ACP—but that’s not the best part. By buying just one gun, you can have your choice of a 9+1 concealed carry gun that’s just 27 ounces and with a height of just 4.55 inches or more of a full-size 13+1 pistol, just by using a convenient Mag X-tension. With Mag X-tension installed the gun weighs 29 ounces; OAL in both configurations is seven inches.

Want a bigger high-cap version of the same gun? Simply install the 13-round magazine with Mag X-Tension and you've got a short-barreled gun with a full-size grip.

The gun comes with both the 9- and 13-round mags and the X-Tension. The fully ramped barrel is finished in Melonite. The three-dot sights are steel. The polymer frame gun is available with forged steel black slide and polymer frame for $732 or bi-tone (stainless slide, black frame) for $797. The XD(M) Compact 3.8 .45 comes with carrying case, two stainless steel Megazines, mag loader, double mag pouch, three interchangeable backstraps and three X-Tensions.

We hope to get our hands on one of these as soon as possible for test, so stay tuned.

If Springfield put a thumb safety on it (XD 45 Service) I'd buy one.

  • ckerst

I have an XD with the 4" barrel 13 shot capacity. IIt is the easiest shooting gun I own. It makes me look like dead eye Dick. I give all the credit to the gun since I can't shoot anywhere near as well with any of the other pistols I own. Jim, as for the safety I has a grip safety and a trigger safety, for me, under extreme stress I'd rather not have to manipulate a lever or switch. You grab it like you mean to shoot it and keep your finger off the trigger until you do shoot, it's as safe as a firearm can be.

when is coming out the new Springfield Armory XD(m) 3.8 .45 ACP

  • Jeff

I have the .40 s&w version of this gun and I asked the same ?. The gun store told me that if you get the non high capacity California version it has a thumb safety on it

  • Willie Carry

I have an XD-45 with a thumb safety. I like the thumb safety for when I conceal carry. If someone were to take the pistol out of the holster, which can and does happen, I would have the extra seconds to react. My old XD-45 is the basic version and I have had it for a few years now. It has never once failed. It is as accurate as any pistol I own. I have a new XDm-40 that is a very well built handgun real Croatian Creation.

  • Raul Gonzalez

People knock these guns for not having a thumb safety and not being real american made due to fact that there made in Croatia. I have two XDM's both 9mm and full size and a compact XD in 9mm and i wouldn't trade them for anything! they are simply the best bang for your dollar handguns out there and i would put them up against any other manufacturer of polymer frame manufacturers!

  • Tom

I have the XD45c and I will by the new XDm45c. I don't like manual safeties on handguns because I then have to remember if it's on safe or not. I like the gripsafety as an extra safety feature, especially when holstering. These guns make you shoot like a pro.

  • Dr KillorCure

I am an Executuve Protection Agent. I trust my life and my clients life with this weapon system. I've waited two years for them to come out with this model chambered in a .45. Thank you springfield. I'll be making a B line to get one. With the double safety mechanics on this weapon you do not need a thumb safety. When you get that adrenal dump you go to gross motor skills; simple things like decock, or releasing the safety become extremly hard. Less is more.

  • Loctite

I bought one 3 weeks ago. It is great. Also own 4" xd 45. Wouldnt trade them for anything else.

  • wtfiwwu

It has a grip safety, and a trigger safety. Maybe you should buy a sling shot .

  • xd rocks

Willie cary — no one should get your pistol out of your holster (get a conceal one that locks) and if they were to and wasent familiar with that model they would be looking all over for a thumb safety when there isnt none.

  • Jason

Just got the new xdm 45 and it makes shooting a piece of cake need to buy one wow

  • freddy

I owen a 3.8xdm 9mm but the regular frame, how I can change my frame to the compact one?

  • Bill

I'm a police officer and have really been looking to buy this pistol to replace my Glock 23 as my off duty gun. Kinda hopeing the price will drop down to a least the $ 500.00 range. Does it come with night sights?

    • Hoodooman

I don't think you will find this gun in the $500.00 range, but try a web site called "Cheaper Than Dirt". They have some of the best pistol prices I have found. I found that some stores will price match, even an online store as long as it is in the same state. If you buy online the gun will have to ship to a dealer and they usually charge a small fee to transfere the weapon to the buyer.

    • slbmoneyman

No it does not come with night sights but the stock sights are replaceable

  • Ronnie Hill

I just bought the XDM 45 compact 3.8, it's the most smooth, most accurate, and easiest shooting high caliber handgun I have ever had the pleasure of shooting, much less of owning. Springfield has done an exceedingly great job of adding extra gear, with a great weapon. I'd put this compact 45 up against just about any other on the market today. Just two complaints, the XDM kit comes short one magazine, and the polymer holster is taking the finish and turning it a shade of gold on the upper slide. You know I think that I can deal with it, to own such a great firearm. 5/19/12 Ronnie Hill

  • george snyder

i have the xd9 , and love it cant wait too bye the xdm 45 compact 3.8 . held it in my hand liked all the goodies it comes with.

  • Irish Pride

I have owned the xd 40 sub compact for years and could not be happier with it. I need something a little bigger with a little more stopping power, I will look no further than the xdm 45 acp to fulfill my needs.

    • Sam

The new XDM .45 ACP is the best gun "we" have every used. Accurate, low recoil, w/ 13+1 mag, easy conceal. At 25 yards, a novice can make a professional cluster. Glock and Sig have some catching up to do with this handgun IMHO.
