The finals of the 25m Sport Pistol event provided some of the best drama of the pistol shooting disciplines thus far. South Korea’s Jangmi Kim’s set an Olympic record in the qualification round with a 591 (298 in the precision stage and 293 in rapid fire) that gave her a commanding five-point lead over the field going into the finals—a lead she nearly gave away.
In sport pistol, the top eight shooters fire four rapid-fire strings, the scoring rings divided into tenths with the maximum shot value 10.9. Kim struggled on a couple of the strings, firing a decent but not great 201.4 finals score—she had nines in every string but her last one—to hang on to her gold by a single point.
Fortune was not nearly so kind to Tanyaporn Prucksakorn of Thailand. She finished the qualification round in second place, five back of Kim and one point ahead of three other athletes. And then came the finals. In her last two strings, Prucksakorn had several bad shots—7.6, 8.7 and 7.6—and very few 10s; her 192.4 finals tally dropped her out of the medals and into eighth place.
Waiting in the wings were defending sport pistol Olympic gold medalist Ying Chen of China, Kira Mozgalova of Russia and Olena Kostevych of Ukraine, fresh off her bronze medal air pistol performance—all bunched at 585, with the rest of the field only one or two points behind them.
Chen fired an excellent final. Of her four five-shot strings, only two had shots less than 10, and her 206.4 score in the final was almost enough to erase Kim’s lead and earn Chen a second gold medal in sport pistol. Kostevych overcame a bad string in which four of the five shots scored less than 10 to finish strong and grab her second bronze medal of the Games.
The lone USA entrant, Sandra Uptagrafft of Phenix City, AL, ended her first Olympic experience with a 28th place finish. She fired a 286 in the precision stage and a 290 in rapid fire for a 576.
