Smith & Wesson's first 1911 .45
Smith & Wesson has introduced its version of what is arguably the most popular handgun in the world, the 1911 Government Model. Called the SW1911, it is the full-size model of the famous John Browning design with a 5-inch barrel. Other model sizes are expected to follow. The only significant change from the original design is that the SW1911 comes with a Smith & Wesson-style external extractor, a popular custom modification that increases functional reliability. The all-stainless steel pistol comes with two eight-round magazines. Other highlights include a three-dot sighting system, an extended beavertail, and a drop safety that is not connected to the trigger assembly. The price had not been set at press time but is expected to be in the $1,000 range. Contact Smith & Wesson, Dept. HG, 2100 Roosevelt Ave., Springfield, MA 01104; (800) 331-0852; www.smith-wesson.com.
