Staff Sgt. Elizabeth “Libby” Callahan
August 2008
Staff Sgt. Elizabeth “Libby” Callahan
Age: 56
Hometown: Columbia, SC
Event: sport pistol
Libby is the oldest known woman to compete in the Olympics, so it’s not like she’s some Jane-come-lately to the sport--although her competition experience dates back only to 1980, when she was working with the Washington, DC, police department. Still, in the two-plus decades since, she’s competed in three Olympic Games--1992, ’96 and ’04 (the latter in both sport pistol and air rifle)--and was national champion in sport pistol in 2006 and 2007. An Army Reservist, she counts her military support as key to keeping her going. Libby earned her spot on the team with a second-place sport pistol finish at this year’s trials.
